The old days when Lego blocks were just toys for little boys and girls to play with at home are long gone. This summer in Japan, Lego blocks will be used to stimulate people’s imagination into building the future—a look at what streets, buildings and landscapes will look like 50 years from now.

Though I agree that we need to start thinking about what kind of alternative forms of power we are going to use not just in Japan, but worldwide. Many of my clients are working harder than smarter. This is not a put-down of their intelligence. It is a statement about the conventions of the way most of us live and work. Without a concerted effort to step back and take an objective look at how we function day in and day out, we find ourselves subject to old ways of doing things without periodic checkups to see if they are working.

The first step to changing the high stress road to burnout approach to your work day is to build in “joy breaks” or mini refreshers. It is not true that you get more done if you don't stop for lunch or other refreshing breaks during the day. On the contrary, I always remember the days I sat at my desk searching for a solution to a particular problem. I tried very hard to come up with the answer and was not successful.

In the afternoon of the second day, I threw my hands in the air, exasperated, and went out to pull a few weeds from my garden. That's when the light bulb went off and I had the answer.

In order to have meaningful joy breaks a plan is necessary. Start by making a list of things you consider fun and refreshing that can be done in 5 or 10 minutes, a half hour, an hour or more. Then list the supplies you will need to have on hand when you want to do that activity: magazines, puzzles, a musical instrument, books, CD's, running shoes, Legos, phone numbers of friends or family, gardening gloves, crayons, paints, jelly beans, yoga instructions, a basketball, a movie schedule, etc. Make sure that your breaks have NOTHING to do with your work.

A Parents Survival Guide to Legoland Windsor

On Legoland Windsor:

I have visited Legoland many times over many years, as well as having made and heard suggestions from many, many families over the years. It has given me a set of “rules” that have become invaluable in attacking and surviving a day out at Legoland in Windsor.

There really can be nothing worse than planning a trip to Legoland and to turn up just after the park is open at 10am. This is the first fatal move. You will end up queuing almost as soon as you get off the M4 motorway (see Getting To Us for directions). This inevitably means you get to the Legoland park some time after 10am, more likely nearer 11am, then queue into the parking area, queue to get tickets, queue to get through the ticket barrier, queue to get on the train down the hill and then you continue your day with a bit more queuing on all the rides. Lovely!

I think you can all see the picture I'm painting here. I will just add that this is normally only this bad on peak days in summer, at weekends and during the school holidays, but it can happen at any day to a greater or lesser degree depending upon the weather – it suddenly turns hot and sunny, everyone decides to go to Legoland – or there’s a special offer on you didn't know about – all the locals with their Legoland annual passes turn out for the day.

Legoland Windsor - What to do?

So how do you start off on the right foot?

The most important thing to remember is that the Legoland park opens at 10am, and by park I don’t mean the parking, the pay points, the Lego shop or the hill top restaurant!

Yep you guessed it, this is all open earlier, at 9.30am. This is when you should be rolling up to the parking area. From the previous scenario you are already 1 hour ahead of those less fortunate who are about to get stuck in the traffic queues off the M4!

Legoland Windsor - Have a Plan

So you’ve arrived and parked up, its about 9.40am and you’ve unpacked the kids and are wandering off to the ticket booths, but of course if you’ve planned ahead – which you should have because you’re reading this for a start – and have bought your Legoland tickets online (normally a slight discount) or bought them from Langton House with your accommodation and got the 2 day passes …. You can pass straight into the Beginning, get your bearings, form The Plan of attack, and try and keep the children away from the shop! Try and get some stickers for the kids, these have your mobile phone number on them in case they (or you) get separated. Check out the Model Makers Workshop and Hall of Fame – some amazing Lego models, a near life size 747 cockpit, the Lego Crown Jewels amongst many other exhibits. Alternatively, just get a coffee at the Pitstop Café. There is plenty to do here for ½ an hour to chill out and relax before you hit Legoland proper. The Plan will help you get an idea of where to head first, which rides your children want as well as those with height restrictions and the times of the shows throughout the day.

Legoland Windsor - To train or not to train?

It is getting towards 10am, head down to the Hill Train. Now it may not be worth getting on the train, particularly if there is already a queue, after all, the purpose of this guide is to cut down the queuing, so why would you want to start the day in one! Just wait until they let you past and walk on into the park.

It’s all downhill into the park, but it’s now time to follow The Plan you thought about earlier. The basic rule is to walk to the back of Legoland and work your way forward. Its important to get to the major rides as soon as you can, do them and then you can relax and make the most of the park for the rest of the day.

Legoland Windsor - Which rides are best?

In my opinion the best rides at Legoland in 2006 were the Dragon Ride, Pirate Falls, Jungle Coaster and the Driving School. The one thing you can guarantee is that by midday there will be at least a 45 minute queue for all these rides, so its best to try and tick them all off you list as soon as possible. Of course if your little lovelies are too small or just into something else, then make sure you have it in The Plan.

On the walk down the hill, do not get distracted by the show at the Harbour area or the model village, these will be your saving grace later in the day. When you’ve done the rides that are important to you, or the queues have built up, this is the time to start doing all the many other things that are on offer in Legoland.

Legoland Windsor - Avoiding the Line ups

There are so many things that you can do that will not involve much, if any, queuing at all, for instance:-

1. The Harbour show is always fun for adults and children.
2. The Rat Trap – an adventure playground.
3. The Amazing Mazes -yep, its a maze, but done in a Legoland theme.
4. Enchanted Forest – good for a slow quiet wander, full of Lego animals.
5. Mini Land – do not underestimate this, it's brilliant. I thought it was going to be the most boring bit of Legoland, but for adults and children, its often the most interesting. Loads of moving boats, cars and trains moving all around a superb model village made of lego bricks. Constantly being updated every year with more and more buildings.
6. Water Works – get the swimming costumes on and let them run in and out of the water jets, great fun and us adults get to sit and watch the mayhem! Take sun tan lotion in summer and swimming costumes.
7. Model Makers Workshop - If you didn't do it earlier then here's your chance. Probably more interesting than you think, I shall say no more!
8. Imagination Theatre - Usually a show of some sort, again good entertainment and a chance to sit down!
9. Discovery Zone - A chance to play, build and learn with Lego.
10. Duplo Play Area - A fun area with slides and climbing frames, and seats for us adults! Aimed more towards the younger children.

Legoland Windsor - Important things to Remember

The following is a list of some of the important things to remember to do and things to bring to help make your day at Legoland as fun and painless as possible.

Legoland Windsor - Checklist

1. Legoland Windsor Map – check your children’s height before you set off, and make sure of the rides they are able to get on.
2. Tickets – pre-book if possible. We at Langton House are selling tickets as part of our accommodation - see conditions.
3. Food – Sandwiches, drinks and snacks. It is expensive in the park, but there is plenty of room to sit out on the grass and have a picnic, although I have found the food sold in Legoland to be generally very good quality.
4. Show times – Find out the times of the various shows and plan your afternoon around these.
5. Swimming suits – The Water Works is fantastic fun in the hot weather but expect the children to get absolutely drenched!
6. Sun screen - don't get burnt in the sun, even England gets hot in the summer.
7. Double check that the park is open! It has varied opening times and dates. Don't make the mistake of turning up to find its closed.

Legoland Windsor - In Summary

I really think Legoland is a brilliant park for the younger children. After about 11 or so it becomes progressively less interesting and for young teenagers I think other parks like Thorpe Park are better suited. Children under 3 can also find it a bit restrictive, but then again they are free to get in! But don’t let this put you off in any way. Legoland was built as a safe and fun place for the kids to explore. Enjoy your day, don’t expect to get it all done, it now really takes a good day and a half to cover it all. Think about staying in Windsor (at Langton House of course!) and looking around Windsor and using a two day Legoland pass. This way you really will be able to get to the park early with allot less stress and less stress = more fun! The main problem and perhaps the only real criticism with Legoland is that if you are a lone parent and you want to take 2 children, it becomes very difficult unless one or both are old enough to be left on their own, as so many of the rides are based on a parent and child combination.

Above all, remember this guide is only here to aid you.

Legoland was sold in late 2005 to a major entertainments group - this can only be good as we can look forward to much more investment over the coming years. There is expected to be an investment of over £7 million in late 2006 in preparation for the 2007 season. Lego`s Laws for Life

Just about everybody owns or has owned a bucket of Legos in their time. There’s no denying the fun they provide for a child or even for an adult, which is why, many Lego collections are passed down from one generation to the next. These brightly colored blocks of joy serve to challenge our creativity and our imaginations. They act as an empowering influence on our lives in that they almost beckon us to transform them into anything we want or can imagine.

Michelangelo was never short on imagination despite the fact he knew nothing of Lego. On completion of the Pietà [one of his greatest works of art] he was heard to have said, “The work of art was always in the block of marble. My job,” he went on, “was to chip away at the unneeded bits of stone to reveal the creativity and beauty within.”

It’s not a stretch to believe that if Michelangelo were alive today, he’d no doubt see similarities in a simple box of Legos. He may have pointed out; the art is always in the bricks… the challenge is to assemble them to reveal a thing of beauty.

How true - but where’s the relevance?

Lego Website - Lego Law #1: With Legos, There are No Restrictions!

Metaphorically speaking, Lego Law #1 in tandem with Michelangelo’s rationale clearly demonstrates a similarity to human beings and the laws that govern life.

Each one of us – without exception – is blessed at birth with creativity and imagination. To be fair, we’re not all blessed equally but there are still no limits on what we can do with the gifts we’ve been given. Although I could wax on about this for days, my point is, humans, like Lego, possess the fundamental building blocks to accomplish almost anything we want or can envision. And from Michelangelo’s perspective, the beauty [we all have the power to create] is already within us. We just have to chip away at life to find it.

Lego Website - Lego Law #2: Legos need Sunlight!

No imagination, beauty or creative works of art will ever come to fruition if the Lego collection is under a bed or in the back of a darkened closet. That is to say, to create great works of Lego art, one must liberate them from the dark to the light so that then – and only then – steps can be taken to build structure from inspiration and imagination.

How sad it is that most people go through life keeping their creative building blocks in the darkness of their mind. Henry David Thoreau noted, “Most people live lives of quiet desperation.” Like hidden Legos waiting for new creative opportunities, human beings innately posses the fundamental building blocks for improvement that sit patiently for new marching orders to express themselves.

Lego Website - Lego Law #3: Don’t be Afraid to Tear Down and Start Again!

Parents are often taken aback to see children destroy a Lego creation they worked hours on to complete. Psychologists are quick to remind parents, the act of destruction is both developmental and healthy. In the end, children learn better and more innovative ways to construct their ‘Lego-ations’.

Not surprisingly, the most successful men and women from all walks of life will attest to the fact that success of any kind results from the act of teardown and rebuild. The psychological motivation for this is not rooted in ongoing feelings of dissatisfaction or lack of accomplishment but rather a positive belief in the vital need to improve through renewal.

On the other hand, whether it’s Legos or Life, a complete teardown and rebuild is not always essential. In Legos, the addition of two imaginary jet engines may be all that’s necessary to turn a plane into a JET – and the same is also true for life strategies. Sometimes a fine-tune is all that’s required. The trick is, recognize it and don’t be afraid!

Lego Law #4: Lego Art Becomes an Immediate Target!

Don’t ever expect your childhood siblings to share in your Lego vision. The fact is; little brothers and sisters are always ready to help you expedite the Lego Law #3 ritual - especially the ‘Teardown’ phase. Experienced Legoists learn quickly to protect their creations to ensure they continue to reap the rewards of their hard work.

So too in the laws of life! Those who toil upward attract uninvited scrutiny on all they do as a result of their undaunted dedication to success. To dare to stand apart from the crowd, to embark on an uncharted course, to risk everything by tearing down to rebuild – opens one up to green-eyed interpretation and not so unexceptional ridicule.

For the true Legoist, it is risk that fuels the fires that create the new and improved work of art. For high-achievers, risk fans the flames of passion, which, in the end, is what separates them from those who are destined to sit, uncomfortably, on the sidelines – having already put away their proverbial Legos!

Bring up the word “Lego” to adults and they will start to think back to the childhood days spent at home building youthful masterpieces made out of plastic Lego building bricks. This is a proof that Lego has been a part of many peoples childhood years going back to the colorful plastic interlocking bricks were patented in 1958. From houses to vehicles, to shops and train sets, Lego has had them all in its ranks. Even the newer generations of children have developed a fascination with Legos. Although they cannot compete with Lego Star Wars on gaming systems such as Playstation 3 and Xbox, Lego toy trains remain to be in the list of “toys to buy” during holidays and special occasions. Of course, it has helped that Lego has partnered with companies that have allowed popular franchises to be given the Lego transformation. What’s astonishing is that even with the emergence of new Lego sets, the classic Lego train sets remain a favorite. It might even be surprising that trains sets are particularly very popular to grownups that consider themselves train enthusiasts. Building trains out of Lego pieces has proved to be a fun pastime activity to alleviate stress, and of course, bring out the inner kid in every adult.

It’s quite amazing that Lego has endured the changing times highlighted by the onslaught of high tech toy products. Customer loyalty has played a big part in Lego’s survival, but more than that, it’s the continuous reinventing that has made Lego stand firm, even when faced with fierce competition. Take the case of Lego train sets and train station sets. The early models were introduced in the late 60’s and ever since then, the trains have undertaken various makeovers to keep up with the times. This means that the newest models you see today are products that have had some inspiration from the older models of yesterday. Train enthusiasts will even go so far as to create their very own train models using Lego building bricks to build them. If you see Lego train models being displayed in exhibits or trade shows, don’t expect to see them, as such, in the toy sections of your favorite toy store. Lego aficionados utilizing advanced Lego construction techniques most probably made them. Having said that, anyone can make his or her own train set from scratch. The important thing to remember is to start from the basics. People who were inspired by the classic models of station trains made the awe-inspiring Lego train sets you see on public display.

Lego may be selling pre-designed train sets but what hardly any people know is that through Lego Digital Designer and Lego Factory, they can design there own trains. It’s a simple process that can have amazing results. The trick is to know the fundamental laws of Lego construction. Add a little creativity and inspiration and you’re off. Of course, having plenty of patience and enthusiasm will go a long way. It takes a great deal of skill to build complex train sets, but with a lot of practice, you can find yourself getting very good at building even the most sophisticated train layout.

As an added bonus, and what’s really cool, is that using Lego toy building sets can be a great bonding activity between kids and their parents!

For the Star Wars and/or Lego fanatic in all of us, Lego brought a new era of enjoyment when they agreed to a license with Lucasfilms, enabling them to produce a unique Star Wars line of Lego toys. The Lego Star Wars series has been available since 1999 and has been continually expanded upon. It was introduced with characters and vehicles from the original Star Wars trilogy (Episodes IV-VI). Since then there have been new sets and releases that encompass the prequel trilogy (Episodes I-III) and even the latest Clone Wars animated film and TV series.

All of the mainstays of the Star Wars franchise are available in Lego form. The characters, for the most part, maintain the typical Lego figure. That means that they have a square body with a block shaped head, with just slight variations such as colors and accessories like capes or hats/helmets. However, due to the wide discrepancy between the shapes and sizes of many of the Star Wars characters, unique and original molds were created for the Lego Star Wars line. Darth Vader for example, has his own easily recognizable head and head shape, as do the Stormtroopers, Yoda and many other aliens and characters. Outside of the characters, Lego Star Wars also produces all of the recognizable and famous ships and vehicles from the franchise. In addition to these characters and vehicles, Lego has released a vast array of Star Wars products, including several additions to their Technic line, which is based on complex parts and movement and are less reminiscent the classic block look, feel and construction of Lego figures. Also released was a mini figure magnet series with a dozen Star Wars characters. Additionally, Lego released several Star Wars products for their Ultimate Collector Series, which are large and highly complex designs. The Millennium Falcon for this series, with over 5,000 pieces, was the largest and most complex Lego product ever released for the public.

The single most popular Lego Star Wars product however would have to be the videogame series. These videogames sold tremendously well and reached critical acclaim across both the Star Wars and videogame community. The first game was based on the prequel trilogy, and the second game was based on the original trilogy. Afterwards, both were released together in one complete addition.

Lego Star Wars toys, figures and products are fun for just about everybody. Star Wars LEGO Set 10179, The Lego Millennium Falcon, is part of LEGO's Ultimate Collector Series (UCS) that has wowed fans with large models, attention to detail and high collectability. The Lego Millennium Falcon is not only the largest of these sets ever released it is the largest LEGO set ever, with over 5000 pieces. For Star Wars fans there is the added bonus that this ship is built to minifigure scale. So that means that the minifigures that come with the set are in correct size proportion to the huge ship that transports them across the galaxy.

The minifigures are probably the least interesting part of the set, given the appeal of the ship, but it is nice that LEGO sought to include minifigures with the set as previous UCS releases have not included any figures. There are five figures, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Obi wan Kenobi and Chewbacca all in Episode Four, A New Hope garb. It is a good selection of figures that could have been improved by adding the final two characters that travelled with this crew on their travels, the two droids R2-D2 and C3PO.

The Millennium Falcon ship is a Corellian Engineering Corporation YT-1300 freighter and was won by the smuggler Han Solo in a game of Sabacc. The person he won the ship off was none other than Lando Calrissian. The LEGO model itself is obviously very big and would warrant a significant display area if it is to be put on show. The ship is over 33" long, 22" wide and 8" tall (84cm long x 56cm wide x 21cm tall). And given the piece count this is not the kind of set that you will be assembling very often, so defiantly decide where it is going to go before you start building!

The detail on the UCS model is beautiful and the attention given to even the smallest surface extends all over the ship. A large variety of small pieces are applied to the top surface to give it the realistic look. Given all the attention paid to the outside it is a shame that there is almost zero playability inside the ship.

Two people can sit side by side with another two people in a row behind them. There is a boarding ramp underneath and a gunner chair at the top. That is about it. Granted, much of the inner space is taken up with construction pieces to keep this large and wide set together but it would have been nice to see a dejarik table or some sleeping quarters etc. But this is a minor quibble.

The set comes with a large spiral bound instruction book and will take some hours to build. It also features a display card with detailed ship specifications of the ship to accentuate the display. Overall it is a highly recommended for those with the money to afford the $499 model and the space to store it.

LEGO is no longer just for kids! Star Wars fans were delighted when in 1999, the first Star Wars themed LEGO set was released to coincide with The Phantom Menance movie and became one of the coolest things for fans to own.

Very soon after, the LEGO sets for the newer movies (Episodes I to III) started to emerge following each movie. You could build many scenes from each movie or just play with the models of the ships or LEGO men characters.

Recently LEGO extended it's licence with Lucas film Ltd to continue releasing sets until 2011.

Not only are the sets themselves popular, but they also spawned a series of video game releases based on the Star Wars LEGO sets.

The Lego Millenium Falcon and X-Wing

The Millennium Falcon and X-Wing spacecraft are still to this day the most popular sets to own. Specific LEGO pieces were created to achieve the accurate look of each spacecraft.

Over time many of the sets, including the Millenium Falcon, have been redesigned to improve the accuracy of each model.

The mini figures have also undergone many transformations over time. Obi-Wan's torso and face have changed color, the Storm Troopers have had three different helmet and head shapes, not to mention many different torso colors to help improve their look.

There is no doubt that the vehicles were the most popular sets, and therefore LEGO went on to create the Ultimate Collector's Series which included more detail and were generally larger in size. They were more expensive that the original LEGO sets (due to more pieces and a higher skill level to build) but still proved popular with fans and collectors alike.

Expanded Universe sets are in plans for the future based on the fictional background of the Star Wars universe.

On a recent trip to San Diego with my five year old daughter, I was in for a pleasant surprise in the form of Legoland California. I've known about the Legoland theme park for a few years and, on a recommendation from a good friend of mine, decided to give the place a try. What a good decision it was because for any family with children under the age of ten, a day at Legoland is something that shouldn't be missed. I took more pictures of my daughter during our visit to Legoland California than I did at Disneyland and The San Diego Wild Animal Park combined.

Legoland is divided into eight different areas, each with their own theme, featuring rides and attractions that are on a Lego scale. And when I say Lego scale, I mean that almost everything in the park is made of those famous toy blocks that so many of us played with growing up. The best way to describe what to expect from a visit to Legoland is to play a game of Lego Star Wars with your child on your favorite video game system. The experience is something that kids will love with just enough fun left over for an adult. One of the main goals of a theme park, which Legoland achieves well, is to create attractions that parents and children can enjoy together.

The main thing separating Legoland from most other theme parks is that most of the attractions offer children a hands-on experience. There were several times throughout our visit that I had to interrupt what my daughter was doing in order to reach our goal of seeing the entire park. Each activity that she participated in could have easily occupied our whole day if allowed to do so. It's not hard to see why when your child can play with thousands of Lego blocks, shoot water cannons at pirate ships, dig for dinosaur fossils, drive Lego cars, and run around in large playground areas. The most unique feature of Legoland, which I found both interesting and clever, were the Lego playing areas that were near many of the rides. It allowed the children to play with Legos while the parents waited in line. Anyone who has ever waited in line with their young child at Disneyland or Six Flags would understand what a great idea this is.

As mentioned before, Legoland offers many great picture taking opportunities because the attractions are, for the most part, interesting and easy to approach up close. One area of the park that is a must-visit is Miniland USA. It features Lego built models of famous structures such as the Washington Monument, the Statue of Liberty, the Golden Gate Bridge, and many others. The model of the White House even included a moving presidential motorcade that drives down a replica of Pennsylvania Avenue. My daughter's favorite parts of Legoland were The Dragon rollercoaster and The Hideaways play area which are both located in the Knight's Kingdom. As for myself, I couldn't resist the temptation to test my aptitude as a fireman at the Fun Town Fire Academy. This attraction reminded me of the physical challenges you see on today's reality shows. Of course, I did let my daughter help me drive the fire truck just a little bit.

Overall, our trip to Legoland California was a fun filled day of family togetherness. The marketing of Legoland, although not far reaching, is excellent because it accurately portrays the excitement to be had at the park. Legoland's employees were both friendly and efficient, and the facilities, especially the bathroom areas, were clean. Bring your wallet because Legoland is a bit pricey, but the wide variety of food is good by theme park standards and there are plenty of gift shops to buy souvenirs and every type of Lego set you can imagine. The next time you and your family visit the San Diego area, don't forget to squeeze a trip to Legoland California into your schedule, you won't be disappointed.

I took the Keikyu line to Shinagawa, transferred to the Yamanote line for Tokyo Station, then boarded a Tohoku line Shinkansen for NasuShiobara, transferred again to the Tohoku JR line one station and changed to a bus for the park. Total transport, round-trip was about $130. Entry and free pass was 4900 yen ($45)

I had many issues this day from lost train tickets, forgotten change, left my CC at home, etc. I missed the bus I wanted, causing me to arrive back home almost two hours later than I had planned. I was pretty stressed and I almost gave up on this trip, but I’m now less than five coasters from hitting #400, so I forged on. Here is my thoughts on the park and coasters, minus my headaches. A huge “domo arigato gozaimasu” goes to the park manager who helped me shortly after I arrived at the park.

I arrived at Nasu Highland about 11:15, and proceeded to the Dragon, a small trailer-mounted powered-coaster, but I don’t think that it is an actual Go Gator, so I took a spin. Two round trips, basic helical course, but surprisingly quick.

Next up, I climbed up to Panic Drive’s elevated station. Neon pink and mint green, with blue and yellow antique car trains, this custom mouse is a Meisho creation. The four passenger cars roll out of the station, dropping slightly and curving around 180 degrees to the left on it’s way to the lift. From the top the train drops through another left turn and rises up into two standard switchbacks before dropping again. The car rises for one switchback, followed by two 225 degree turns. After dropping slightly and rising again, the train hit’s the breaks before a final 180 degree left turn into the station. There was one trim brake that engaged when I rode with two other adults, but allowed an unchecked ride when I rode alone. Not particularly thrilling, and without even the slightest pop of air, the saving grace of this mouse was that it wasn’t a cookie cutter coaster.

After Panic Drive, I checked out the LEGO display nearby. The best part was a showing of the CG animated short; LEGO Star Wars: Revenge of the Brick. This 5 minute, zero dialogue film has appearances by most of the cool characters in ep. III, but no boring bits. It is hysterical at times, and was a highlight of my day. Also in this area were a miniature railroad and flying Dumbo-like ride.

It is really easy to see that legos are a toy that will probably never go out of style. This will be a toy that is popular for anyone between the ages of five to fifty five. Even though most fifty year olds do not head out to buy their own sets, they seem to be pretty quick to build something with their grandson or granddaughter. This is simply because this is a toy that involves the mind and creative fun all at the same time. And with so many sets out there, it is easy to see why no one ever seems to loose interest in these toys.
There is a slight problem though as it seems that legos are marketed more for boys then for girls. Even though this is a toy for both genders and for just about any age, a lot of girls are finding that they are left out. Walk down any toy aisle in a major department store or toy store and look for legos. When you find them you will probably notice that there are a lot of sets that are for boys. There are cars, spaceships, cowboys, and aliens. When it comes to entertaining the boys, there are more options then anyone could ever find enough time to build. There are legos for girls but they generally are not found on the shelves in the department stores.
There may be nothing you can do about the girls legos not being sold in your local store, but that does not mean that you are stopped from purchasing some for your daughter. A video game based on the Star Wars movie was released back in April 2005. It had some few changes when it was rendered into a video game, the most apparent of them being that it was made of the ever-popular building block toy-Lego. The game was made to be child-friendly but is still somehow enjoyable for adults to play.

And now, its developers have come up with the sequel to this game. This is an action/adventure game that is reminiscent of the movie from which it was based on. The action is a full combination of foot levels and opportunities to ride vehicles such as Millenium Falcon, AT-ST walkers, and speederbikes.

There are two main modes of play for this game: Story and Free Play. In the Story mode, one or two players can play through the entire gaming adventure as characters from the movie. Meanwhile, any levels you have competed in can be saved automatically so you can come back to them during Free Play. If you are in the middle of the game, and someone wants to join in, it is possible. All you have to do is plug in a controller and push the start button, and you and your friend can enjoy the game together.

Lego Game - Mos Eisley Cantina

You start the game in Mos Eisley Cantina, which also serves as the central hub for all the levels. There are also three lounges labeled IV, V and VI, where you access the levels. You start off with the first level of episode IV available, and once you have completed that more levels will be opened.

If there is something lacking in this particular title it is that it does not allow online play. It would be interesting to see an online match of Lego-ized characters, but this game promises so much action that this is not really seen as liability. Meanwhile, the shorter loading times for the game is a really good thing as you do not waste so much of your time waiting between levels.

As characters have infinite lives, the difficulty level is pretty much gone in this game. If your character gets killed, it will eventually reappear later on and you would only have earned some penalty in the process.

The controls for this game is simple, requiring only single buttons to make different moves such as attack, to unlock special abilities, switching between characters and jumping. However, other times you need a specific control for your character to do certain things. If you want to switch into a particular character in the middle of a game, simply face that character and press the triangle button.

As for the graphics of this game, there is not much to leave you disappointed as it is so much like in the movie version. Some minor glitches might be too minor for it to affect your overall enjoyment of the game. And with sounds that are so much alike that of the movie, there is some huge reason for you to be nostalgic of the film.

We have heard it before: The average Japanese student is doing as well in mathematics as the best US students. In test after test, the top 5% of US math students are matched by the top 50% of their Japanese counterparts.

Why should that be so? Surely US students compare well with Japanese learners in terms of intelligence, and potential.

Well, we know that schools stay open longer in Japan, an average two hours per day longer, than in the US. It has also been pointed out that in order to promote proper attention to classroom lessons each Japanese classroom period is followed by a recess aimed at allowing excess youthful energy to be discharged. Sadly, this is at a time when many US schools are being forced to abolish recesses altogether because of the threat of violence recesses pose.

Until recently, the one area in which US students continued to outperform their Japanese counterparts was that of creativity. That is, in tests measuring the ability of students to innovate, US learners seemed to be able to consistently rank higher than Japanese learners in their ability to formulate a number of solutions to any given problem.

However, beginning roughly in 2004, Japanese schools introduced a system of creativity training that seems to be opening doors for Japanese students. Today, Japanese students' performance on creativity evaluation instruments is at least as good as that of American students.

Surprisingly, the creativity training system being referred to here was developed by an American University (MIT), and is available to every American school and family. However, the system has not been utilized as in the US as hoped. The name of this magic system is Lego Mindstorms.

Dr. M. Csikszemtmihalyi, in his work entitled Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention, emphasized the importance of providing a sense of freedom, a sense of educational flow to students if we wish them to be creative in mind and spirit.

Mindstorms provides unlimited opportunities for all students to practice free flow thinking as they create mechanical systems of various kinds. However, it is only the Japanese who have fully internalized this message.

Creative flow is, unfortunately, the one environmental element that formal accredited US school programs, especially at the middle and high school levels, find difficult to promote. This is no one individual's fault really. It is rather a logical result of an emphasis on strict adherence to administratively approved programs geared to satisfy state mandates, and the effect these programs have on creative flow, especially when accompanied by the bells and buzzers that John Dewey introduced into American education after his exposure to successful Prussian military training camps at the turn of the last century. Lego Mindstorms creativity programs have, of course, been attempted in American schools, and occasionally one such program can still be found. Unfortunately though, Lego creativity programs have run into obstacles on American campuses as students, in the competitive atmosphere created by the reigning system, aggressively compete for Lego resources, sometimes resulting in violence. When this occurs, the subsequent threat of litigation posed by parents quickly forces school authorities to retreat from free flow programs toward fully restrictive, "in your seat" offerings. This situation then exacerbates the lack of "flow" necessary for promoting creativity among learners.

However, all is not lost.

Many parent groups are attempting to encourage public school districts throughout the United States to look closely at their delivery systems.

In addition, motivational scholarships are being offered by entities such as ToysPeriod in the form of Mindstorms scholarships to encourage free flow creativity in the schools.

Further, there are school models that continue to serve as models for how free flow can work in the US.

For example, Waldorf Schools present materials to students as they, the learners, are ready for them. The Waldorf system looks to each student and responds to each student's academic and physical need as it occurs. In other words, Waldorf never imposes subject matter on segmented age groups as if students were all the same. Waldorf's student-first philosophy then goes a long way toward motivating a student body to enjoy learning, and therefore to fully benefit from Lego Mindstorms offerings. In the online school community, Linda Christas Academy has promoted a similar philosophy.

A warning blast, however, has shaken California Waldorf Schools recently. As Waldorf begins to accept state money, the State educational bureaucracy is looking with some disfavor on the individualized educational concept for which Waldorf stands. Only time will tell if Waldorf is able to maintain its integrity in the face of such state challenges.

From the Lego Mindstorms perspective, beginning with the individual student and his or her learning needs is not rocket science, although with Mindstorms rockets are a definite option.

Let's briefly understand the dynamics of the eBay market place. Like any other market it is supply demand driven, and like a large flea-market if a buyer has knowledge of how many items are for sale at what prices and how many other buyers are in the market, then that buyer can capture the upper hand.
Let`s examine supply. The eBay supply dynamic is a little different in that supply of an item must be seen at a point in time. In other words, because auctions end at different times, one needs to grasp the number of auctions ending in close proximity for the same item. This gives you a feel for the supply of items or in our case Lego. What makes this interesting is that today there could be a large amount of auctions ending for your item, but next week there could be very few. This is one element driving the price. Generally this information is available approximately one week out on the eBay site.
The demand side is slightly more complex and hidden. It is some of this data that the web site I refer to at the bottom helps identify. Demand in eBay terms is measured (by sellers) as a number of factors - how many people view my auction, how many people ask questions, how many people place me on their watch page, and how many people actually bid. Obviously as we progress down this list the data becomes more valid as an indication of demand. Page views are not easy to obtain, although some sellers place a publicly viewable counter on their auction pages. Questions and watchers are available to sellers, and the special web site mentioned below will expose this information. The number of bids is available for all to see.
Now if we happened to produce a graph as one auction progresses of the changes in the number of questions, watchers and bids, once can easily see how the demand is changing as time progresses. Typically if question numbers are high and watchers are high, but bids are low, this may indicate some confusion and a possible buy opportunity. If watchers are very high and climbing, but bids are low, this can point to a last minute bidding war, and a stay out indicator.
Armed with this information and also a quick summary of other similar auctions ending soon, plus a quick feel for the skill set of the seller and the current highest bidder, once can see a picture very different from the average eBay buyer.
Soon the trained eye will see some nice buying opportunities. For the serious collector or Lego enthusiast this will soon bring in parcels of Lego pieces and sets that are quite a bit cheaper than retail. For example it is quite possible to find gems at 50-70% off retail prices. Let`s face it, most Lego pieces don't degrade or damage easy, so the aftermarket such as eBay is the ideal place to buy cheap Lego.

The word Lego is taken from the Dutch for “play well”, which is leg godt. The word is now synonymous the whole world over for a toy which everyone loves to play with be they old, young, boy or girl. We are so used to making things from Lego that rarely do we stop to think about how each individual block of Lego itself is constructed.

Firstly, granules are loaded from large trucks into the granule silos. After this the granules are taken to molding machines. These subject the granules to high temperatures, melting them into a highly viscous substance. This substance is then poured into molds of various sizes to make the bricks that we all know and recognise. Once the molten granules have been poured into the molds they are transported to the decorating and printing stage. Although the color of the brick is determined by the color of the granules in the first stage of the process, the bricks can have patterns printed on to them, or designs. For example, bricks with words on such as taxi or police have them printed on at this stage in the manufacturing process. Once this is complete, the Lego bricks are taken to the packaging area where they are placed into boxes with other Lego pieces ready to be shipped to stores or to wherever they are required.

Lego also have additional branches which are aimed at different users. For example, Duplo is made by Lego but is widely known by the name Duplo and not always associated with Lego. Individual Duplo pieces are much larger than those of a traditional Lego set and they are aimed at a much younger clientele. Children aged 2-6 find Duplo much easier to get hold of because of its increased proportions and so encourage younger children to exercise their creative minds.

Technic Lego is more advanced than standard Lego and so appeals more to the 10-15 year old market. This often incorporates very small pieces as these kits have moving components. For example, you can make such items as a helicopter with propellers which actually move when you turn a handle.

For some time Lego was aimed primarily at boys with kits based on Star Wars or Batman. This balance has now been redressed somewhat and it is now possible to purchase kits to build Disney Princess Castles and such like. Lego is a great toy for children as it helps to improve their hand eye co-ordination as well as their imagination and so children of both sexes should be encouraged to play with it in preference to watching endless hours of TV.

When most people think of Electric Toy Trains, they think of Hornby, Lionel or some other equally famous model train replicas and with good reason as they are simply fantastic trains. But are you aware that Lego also produce electric toy trains and that they not only have trains, but also locomotives, track, rolling stock, train stations, signal houses and a whole load of other track side buildings and they all have the logo construction theme running through them.

This is a great way to introduce kids into the railroad passion without damaging your very expensive collection and also there is a big adult collectors area who are also passionate about this brand. Lego electric toy trains even have their own scale; known as L-scale. The first Lego trains were sold in 1966 (Lego set number 080) and were push-along trains and had a nice bright blue rail.

It wasn't until 1969 that they released a battery powered set (number 115) and one of the carriages carried the batteries. In late 1969, the first truly Lego electric toy train came out (set number 720).

One of the really cool things about Lego electric toy trains was that they could all be upgrade from one to the other. So if you had bought a push-along train it could be upgraded to battery operated one, which in turn could be upgraded to an electric one.
There were no major changes until 1980. Lego changed the tracks from blue to grey and the transformers now supported points, signals, crossing and other accessories and the trains now looked much more realistic.

1991 saw the introduction of the 9 volt system and metal rails being used. The 9 volt system was compatible with other products of theirs. However by 2007 the 9 volt system was completely discontinued. This was due largely to the introduction of the new line of remote control products they brought out in 2006. All rail was now made from plastic and the trains ran on remote control using battery power.

The major advantage of this was that more than one train could be run at the same time and there were no longer any problems with track layouts, point systems and polarity of rails, although there were now problems with range for the remote and also the batteries had to be changed.

In the summer of 2009, Lego released the new "Emerald Night" (set number 10194) and was part of their Technic Line, which I personally think is ugly, but it was a line that was launched to try and help them get some of their investment money back as they had spent so much developing the trains in the last few years.

Lego electric toy trains were very popular and there is even an international Lego Train Club Organization and they exhibit at such festivals as Brickfest. L gauge trains are becoming increasingly popular among middle-age hobbyists who grew up with the building toy as a child, and are frustrated with traditional model trains such as are found in the HO scale electric toy train.

Perhaps he sat with one of his son's Lego blocks in hand, tossing it absently mindedly as he pondered his frustration with his son's inability to learn Braille.

At age 14, mastery still eluded his son despite the teachers' best efforts and individual instruction. In fact, almost everyone had given up on the son learning Braille. Though multiply impaired (including blindness), Kevin Murphy just could not bring himself to give up on the intelligence he believed lurked in his son's mind.

Maybe he stopped tossing it long enough to stare at the small building brick he held in his hand. Then he noticed it--that little brick had 6 circular pegs! [And] their configuration was the same as the Braille cell--three vertical on the left; three vertical on the right!! Since his son thoroughly enjoyed his Lego set, Kevin decided he'd risk it--turn them into Braille letters.

After he'd destroyed his son's Lego set, he enthusiastically called, "Hey, son, come look what I've done with your Lego set!" His son came excitedly to discover his dad had placed some of the Braille letters he'd made on the base that came with the set. Little by little his son actually did learn Grade 1 Braille.

Fourteen years passed before Kevin could afford to make [Tack-Tiles], trademark name, available commercially in 1995. Now they are available in English, French, Spanish, Italian and German literary code as well as Nemeth (for math), music, and computer Braille code--[yes there are that many different codes the Braille student must learn--each with their own rules].

An added benefit for students who are blind and study in an inclusive setting, Tack-Tiles have print letters corresponding to the Braille configuration on the tile. This enables sighted and blind students to interact. A good many sighted students are curious about Braille and will at least learn the alphabet.

Printed Tack-Tiles also enable the classroom teacher to teach the blind student whatever she is teaching to her sighted students.

I used Tact-Tiles to teach addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division (especially long division) to my blind students.

And to think that it all began with Lego.

What to bring?

Any games you`d like to play plus a sleeping bag.

There is one bed available on a first come first served basis.

Amenities Nearby:
There is a restaurant next door, several more nearby, and there is a large supermarket across the
street. The train station is just a 3 minute walk away!

How to Get There from Tokyo, Fujisawa, Atsugi, Machida, Yokohama:

From Shinjuku Station catch an Odakyu Line train bound for Odawara.

So take the Odakyu Line to Odawara. Take a Kyuko (express
train) it has red kanji on the side usually next to the door up top.
It takes about 90 minutes. Bring a good book! Be sure that your
train goes to Odawara and not Fujisawa.

Get off at Odawara Station and transfer to the Daiyuzan Line. Get off
at Iiwahara Station, it takes 10 minutes from Odawara. Take the only
exit, cross the train tracks, turn left at the first street, walk straight and you will
see a cottage like white and brown, house that looks like it came out of a cowboy movie.
We have our store Merry Lue on the first floor and our school and apartment on the second floor.
Come up to the 2nd floor. That is where we will play and sleep.

How to Get There from: Shizuoka, Nagoya and other points South:

Take the Tokaido line or the Shinkansen and get off at Odawara. Transfer to
the Daiyuzan line and follow the directions above (for Tokyo).

**The Shinkansen also stops at Odawara. You take a Kodama Super
Express. It takes about 39 minutes from Tokyo. Costs a little over
3,000 Yen one way.

Take a break from the city and see some mountain views and breathe some fresh
air.

Feel free to pass this on to interested people. Games of all kinds
welcome. Bring whatever you would like to play, chances are, others
will want to play it too. Bring a sleeping bag if you`d like. It is a nice area as well.
A great break from wherever you live with a great bunch of people!

I have literally hundreds of games. Most of which I have never played.

The game Lego Harry Potter based on the movie Harry Potter was reported to be crashing by some users. The users claimed that while playing the game, the screen accidentally starts freezing along with an error message. They have no choice other than terminating the game using Task Manager.

If you are caught in a similar situation and your Lego Harry Potter crashes frequently then you shall try the following:

1. Ensure Game Requirements and make sure you have installed the Graphics Card which the game requires

2. Free-Up the Disk Space and Clean Registry

3. Change Screen Resolution

4. Change Sound Frequency

5. Modify Configurations in a Program File

6. Restore the Default Settings

7. Reinstall the Game

Ensure Game Requirements and make sure you have installed the Graphics Card which the game requires

Refer to the ReadMe documentation for information about the minimum system requirements. Make sure you have the right graphics card which the game requires.

Free-Up the Disk Space and Clean Registry

In some cases, the free space on the disk is very low and thus Lego Harry Potter crashes. Before running the game, care must be taken that you are not running in Low Disk Space situation.

For cleaning the unnecessarily used disk space, non-required files and stuff, you can use a system cleanup utility which will also clean the corrupted registry keys created by the game. This is a very useful and quick way to fix game crashes.

Change Screen Resolution

In some cases, it was observed that changing the screen resolution to 800*600 solved Lego Harry Potter crashes in many PCs.

Change Sound Frequency

Make sure that the Sound Frequency is set to 16 bit, 44100 Hz of CD Quality. It should not exceed 48 kHz.

Here are the steps to change the sound frequency:

1. Click Start | Control Panel.

2. Click Hardware and Sound | Sound.

3. Select your speaker from the new dialog, and click Properties button.

4. Click Advanced tab.

5. Select this Sound Frequency: 16 bit, 44100 Hz of CD Quality

6. You can test it by clicking the Test button at right hand side.

7. Click Apply | OK | Apply | OK.

Modify Configurations in a Program File

There is one file named PcConfig.txt containing instructions for the game. We are going to modify the values of three commands to fix Lego Harry Potter Crashes:

1. Press Windows Key and R to open the Run dialog. Or otherwise, click Start | Run.

2. Type AppData and press ENTER.

3. Double click: Roaming | WB Games | Lego Harry Potter.

4. Open the file named PcConfig.txt

5. Change the values of the commands to the following:

a. Use Hires: 0

b. UseHiresPending: 0

c. DesiredDynamicLightQuality: 0

6. Save the changes you have made.

Note: If you can't find the file named PcConfig.txt, then do a Search by pressing F3 key of your keyboard.

Restore the Default Settings

If you had modified the game settings, then restore them to the defaults. This will help prevent Lego Harry Potter Crashing caused by improper settings or by non-compatible features.

Reinstall the Game

In case the registry/system cleaning and the tips described above do not work then try reinstalling the game:

1. Click Start | Control Panel.

2. For Windows XP, double click Add or Remove Programs. For Windows Vista/ 7, click Programs | Uninstall a Program.

3. Select the game Lego Harry Potter from the list of installed programs.

4. Click Uninstall or Remove button.

5. Follow the on screen instructions.

6. Reboot the system after completion.

7. Run the setup program to install the game again.

Recommendations

When you are planning a child's birthday idea, why not go for a themed one. Initially it may seem like there is more organizing but once you have an agenda, it is really simple. For example, most boys are into Lego in some way or another. It is a great toy for constructing all types of things, from houses to working models of cars or trains.

There are plenty of Lego party ideas to choose from. Lego covers so many different themes themselves you could find yourself having a Star Wars party with Lego Star Wars characters, that is a very popular Lego theme. Or go with a SpongeBob Lego theme, a Lego firetruck theme or a police party or even a beach party if you chose the Lego City Coastguard Theme. If you want to have some relatively quiet time to calm the kids down, you could play draw the funny face on the balloon. The children pass around balloons and each person has to draw something for the face. So one draws the eyes, another draws the mouth and so on. Whoever pops the balloon is out and the last remaining child wins. You will obviously need a ready supply of balloons.

Use Lego party favor supplies to make up the contents of the party bags. You can buy individual packs of Lego that will have enough bricks to build one small item. Bubbles, crayons, coloring pages, temporary tattoos and stickers are always great for adding to the Lego party bags. Have lots of Lego fun with these Lego party ideas.

Christmas is genuinely a time of giving and sharing for most people and for families in particular.

It is very easy to get caught up in a spending frenzy, children in particular are full or "pester power" at this time of year as they see lots of advertising in almost every conceivable medium!

So what should we do? Pockets or purses are not unlimited and yet who wants to be the person to give a gift where the paper and packaging are more exciting than the contents?

Top ten lists abound in both the USA and in the UK. The Toy Retailers Association (TRA) list of Dream Toys for the 2010 holiday season includes a mixture of traditional and technology games as likely best-sellers.

So how about Lego for going back to basics?

The Lego City Airport set included on the Dream List, is quite expensive as a set but does include a great number of inspiring pieces.

What child wouldn't love creating a jet plane or organising passengers moving through revolving doors, X-ray machines and through the Airport Terminal before the Airport Control Tower gives permission for take-off?

Alternatively, the Lego City Fire Station set includes all you need to create a fire truck, the Fire Chief's car, a two garage station with figures and working ladders. You can even rescue the cat from the top of the tree.

Given that the latest Harry Potter movie launched in November, you can be sure that any of the associated, themed Lego sets will also be popular this Christmas including the Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle, Hagrid's Hut, Quidditch Match, Freeing Dobby or the Hogwart's Express Train Set.

The opportunities for developing role play skills and co-operation are endless - though may require a little supervision for younger children at play.
